Last Christmas, Lucy was around 18 months old, the perfect age (in my mind!) to start Christmas themed crafts and games. Here are some of our favourite tried and tested activities that we did at home over the festive period, all of which could be up-levelled for older children.

1. Melted Snowman Craft

Activity: Create a white splodge of paint on a coloured background. This is the perfect chance to get out different tools to create the white base – a pompom held with a peg is a favourite in our house! Add googly eyes and stick on the paper accessories (I printed ours and coloured them in.)

Why I love it: Combines process and product art. Every piece looks different depending on where the accessories are stuck. Super simple for even the youngest of toddlers to do independently. We  used our creations for Christmas Cards.

Potential up-levelling: Older children could draw their own accessories and cut them out independently.

2. Fill The Snowman Game

Activity: Get an empty plastic bottle (with a wide top) and add a snowman face to the outside using marker pens. Fill the bottle with cotton wool balls or white pompoms to make your very own indoor snowman.

Why I love it: Simple and mess free. Can be returned to again and again, Good way to practice fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.

Potential up-levelling: Older children could use a bottle with a narrower neck or use child safe tweezers to remove the cotton wool. Add a time limit or turn it into a race.

3. Paper Plate Wreath

Activity: Cut the middle out of the paper plate and paint the outside green (another great opportunity to explore creating texture by using different implements – a fork would create a nice wreath type texture!) Decorate your wreath. We used foam stickers, but the sky is the limit here – stickers, confetti, paint, ribbons, pompoms, whatever you have to hand! Add a loop of wool or string to the back and hang it up!

Why I love it: So much freedom to choose how to decorate it. Another craft that can be done fairly independently, even by little little ones.

Potential up-levelling: Challenge older children to make the green background of the wreath look more realistic.

4. Snowman Tumble Game

Activity: Use marker pens to draw snowman faces onto paper cups. Stack the cups in a pyramid. Throw a pompom snowball to knock the snowmen down.

What I love it: Aiming and throwing practice. Simple and mess free.

Potential up-levelling: Get the children to decorate their own snowmen cups or create their own snowball pompoms. Number the snowmen to incorporate some adding practice.
