As the cooler months creep in and the days grow shorter, many of us are reaching for the thermostat again. For most households, the seasonal change brings with it a natural rise in energy bills. But for parents, especially those with young children, or those on reduced income due to maternity or paternity leave, the cost of keeping the house warm can be overwhelming.

I remember it all too well - my daughter was born in October 2022, right as heating costs soared and my income dropped to maternity pay. It was a constant feeling of anxiousness, and like so many others, I had to find ways to keep my baby warm without turning the heating on full blast all day.

If you’re in the same boat this year - perhaps welcoming a new little one, or just trying to keep your family comfortable throughout autumn and winter - here are a few small changes I found that genuinely can help make a difference, without relying on central heating.

Layer Up, Even Indoors

It might sound obvious, but it’s amazing how much of a difference an extra layer can make. Keeping a warm dressing gown or thick socks close by can make all the difference, especially during the night feeds or early mornings. For babies, layering vests under sleepsuits and using sleeping bags (safely rated for their age and the room temperature) can help them stay snug without overheating.

Don’t underestimate the power of a warm dressing gown or a good quality blanket - these little comforts made all the difference for me.

Curtains Count

If you can, investing in thick, thermal or insulated curtains helps keep the heat inside once the heating is on. They make a huge difference in keeping the warmth in and the cold out.

Heat the Rooms You Use - Not the Whole House

When you’re spending most of your time in just a couple of rooms, don’t waste energy heating the whole house. I turned off the radiators in the rooms we rarely used and kept the doors shut to stop heat escaping.

Draft-Proofing on a Budget

Blocking drafts from windows and under doors with inexpensive draft stoppers (or even rolled up towels in a pinch). These small gaps can let in a surprising amount of cold air.

Hot Water Bottles Are Underrated

Warm up beds or your sofa in advance with a hot water bottle or heat pack - just make sure they’re safe and kept away from babies and children. They’re a low-cost way to add instant comfort.

The Thermostat

Try turning your thermostat down by one or two degrees - it’s barely noticeable but can cut your energy bill by around 10%. Set timers so you’re not heating the house when you don’t need to be.

You’re Not Alone

If you’re a new parent or simply trying to keep costs down this season, please know you’re not alone in this. I remember how isolating it felt to be choosing between putting on the heating or staying on a budget - but so many others are in the same position.

These changes won’t solve everything, but they do help. Be kind to yourself. You’re doing an incredible job.
